On March 20, 2014 – More than 30 UnitedHealthcare employees were on hand to lay mulch, trim trees, pull ice plant and assist with other outdoor beautification projects. This day of volunteer service was held in conjunction with a new partnership to enhance the facilities of the Hawley Center. Through a grant from CBS EcoMedia and UnitedHealthcare, the Center will replace flooring and install energy efficient heating and air conditioning units. “The Hawley Center is an important resource for our military veterans who are in need,” said United Healthcare's Tony Lonigro, CEO Southwest Region Military and Veterans “UnitedHealthcare is grateful for the opportunity to support our veterans through this important organization, and we hope the residents at this facility enjoy their enhanced facilities and renovations inside the building.”
Volunteer Ed “Sandy” Sand dedicated time each week serving as group leader for the San Diego Stabilization Program, assisting clients on the path to recovery and self–reliance. In July, tragedy struck, and without warning, a medical condition took his life. To pay tribute to Sandy, the family requested contributions be made to Volunteers of America, Southwest. This request prompted a very special donation that is creating a lasting legacy of difference. Twenty-five computers have been contributed in honor of Ed Sand from The San Diego Futures Foundation, an organization dedicated to improving lives through technology.
Thanks to the generous financial support from Bank of America, in partnership with EcoMedia, a weekly clinic has been established to enhance healthcare for veterans at our Hawley Veterans Services Center. The clinic is conducted by a staff physician and nurse, and will include wellness checks, medication management and other healthcare services. The project will improve the continuity of the care and advance the veterans on their path to stabilized physical and mental health.
