Chairman & President's Message

The unstable and at times turbulent nature of our country’s economic environment during the past three years has caused many leaders in the for-profit, government and nonprofit sectors to abandon a forward-looking growth strategy in lieu of a wait and see approach to the future...  Not so with Volunteers of America Southwest. During the past three years we have been able to transcend the land mines and challenges of the current economic environment by pruning underperforming programs, and adding $4.3M of new revenue for programs that are financially sound and aligned with the strategic development priorities for our organization.  The Board of Directors and senior management of Volunteers of America Southwest are not willing to leave the destiny of this organization to chance, we have instead decided to create for ourselves the future that we want to see for this organization.

Volunteers of America Southwest is a faith-based non-denominational nonprofit social services organization that was founded in 1896. Our core services focus on: the education and social development of young children; treatment for individuals with mental health and addiction challenges; and services that address the multi-dimensional needs of the aging population.  Our mission is simple:  “To  inspire hope through our ministry of service by providing individuals and families with tools to improve their quality of life”.   We are not the organization that provides only a day or two of service, we are the organization who returns men and women home clean and sober so they can be parents to their children; we provide permanent affordable housing for low-income seniors and families; and we educate young children with our school readiness and elementary charter school programs.

The Board of Directors and senior management team of Volunteers of America Southwest will continue to keep the focus of this organization on being mission driven, resilient, forward-looking and growth oriented as we enter the upcoming year. We will embrace an unrelenting commitment to quality services, financial solvency, development of our employees and good corporate governance. We will not leave the destiny of this organization to chance, instead we have made a choice to create the destiny we want to see for this organization.
As President and CEO of Volunteers of America I wish to recognize and thank my staff, volunteers, donors and funding agencies for all they have individually and collectively contributed toward this year’s successes.  Anything we achieved this past year we achieved because of the hard work and support of many hands.  Thank you each and every one; your time, talent and resources have made hopes, possibilities and dreams a reality for so many who are less fortunate in our community.

Life Without Black People

This is a story of a little boy named Theo who woke up one morning and asked his mother, “Mom, what if there were no Black people in the world?”

Well, his mother thought about that for a moment, and then said “Son, follow me around today and let’s just see what it would be like if there were no Black people in the world.”
